Definition
A backcountry permit is a separate authorization required for overnight camping outside of designated frontcountry campgrounds, typically for multi-day hikes into the park's interior.
Why it matters
It's easy to confuse this with the standard national park entry pass. The entry pass covers day use of every named trail on this site, including Gros Morne Mountain. A backcountry permit is a separate requirement, and only applies if you're planning to camp overnight away from a regular campground.
Examples
None of the day hikes covered in our hiking guide require a backcountry permit — only multi-day backcountry routes do.
